Grade 10 Assignments - Snow Days

English:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/07/AR2010020702701.html

DUE TUESDAY- Read the review of Orestes and write a paragraph about what you are expecting to see at the production on Wednesday. Complete a Venn Diagram comparing Orestes and Oedipus. What are 5 things that make them different and 5 things that they have in common? Remember that you should have completed a plot map of the play using the synopsis sheet from Friday.

Update: DUE TUESDAY-Choose one of the following statements and find 5-7 quotes from Oedipus that support the statement:
  1. The play justifies the gods by showing-or "proving"that we get what we deserve
  2. Oedipus Rex is a tragedy of destiny. What the play "proves" is that man has no free will but is a puppet in the hands of gods who pull the strings that make him dance
  3. Sophocles was a pure artist and was therefore not interested in justifying the gods. He took the story of Oedipus as he found it, and used it to make an exciting play
  4. King Oedipus shows the humbling of a great and prosperous man by the gods.
  5. There is no indication whatsoever in the myth that Oedipus is attracted by or falls in love with Jocasta. The only reason we are given for Oedipus' marriage to Jocasta is that she goes with the throne.

Once you have identified your 5-7 supporting quotes from Oedipus explain how they support one of the above statements. Your explanations should be a short paragraph. For example: This quote on page 57 shows that Jocasta just came with the throne because....(insert short paragraph)

Our Vocabulary tests will take place on Tuesday.
